The hike starts in a few streets of
Schifflange, which lead quickly to the south of the city, up the forest hills of the
place called “Schëfflenger Bierg”. This is partly made up of backfill, due to the extraction of the minett.
It is possible to observe vestiges of former ore mining such as the “Gro Minière” mine.
Then, crossing the open-cast mines allows you to discover an atypical landscape.
The red color of the stone is reminiscent of the Far West landscape and offers beautiful panoramas!
You leave the “Lallenger Bierg” site to enter the Ellegronn site, which is part of the European network of Natura 2000 protected nature reserves.
Crossing the Ellegronn Natural Park allows you to observe the transformation of the site
of iron ore mining.
You can still observe some traces of the past such as the old funicular, but also observe the metamorphosis of the place which now gives way to magnificent ponds, dry lawns, an alder-ash forest.
After a steep climb, you meet deer, raccoons, ducks, geese… while crossing the Escher Déierepark animal park.
The hike ends in the pleasant Gaalgebierg municipal park in Esch sur Alzette, with
its flowers and its huge playground!
You take the footbridge to arrive directly at the platforms of Esch sur Alzette train station.
The advantages for children:
– the discovery of old mines.
– the animals of Escher Déierepark.
– the very large playground at Gaalgebierg municipal park.
